Chemotherapy

Along with surgery and radiation therapy, chemotherapy is one of the main approaches to cancer treatment worldwide. Regardless of intoxication that it causes, chemotherapy is commonly used. Regressions of tumors or even complete recoveries are often observed as a result of chemotherapy. The objective of chemotherapy is to destroy or, at least, to inhibit the development of cancerous cells with a minimal damage to the body.

Chemotherapy can be administered both before and after surgery. In some cases, it is considered to be the only possible treatment (e.g., lymphoma, small cell lung carcinoma, Hodgkin’s disease, etc.). Cytostatic drugs reduce tumor during pre-surgery period. This assures that surgery become organ-preserving and less traumatic to healthy tissues. Postoperative chemotherapy enables to stop cancer metastasis and prevent the recurrence of disease.

Choice of drugs, time of medication (according to a precise diagnosis, histology of the tumor, the particular stage of the disease, etc.) and administration of chemotherapy is a difficult and serious process. It requires the most cautious approach in the appointment of chemotherapy as a treatment, the choice of regimen, dosing, etc.

The drugs are injected into the blood and circulate in the body. This is a remarkable advantage of chemotherapy over the other types of cancer treatment. Often all of the cancer cells are not removed while surgery or radiation therapy as the latter are local methods only, i.e. their impact is limited to a particular part of the body.

Morphologic pathology laboratory of INNOVACIA Cancer Center provides a unique opportunity to carry out immunohistochemical studies of tumors to determine sensitivity to various drugs. This assures the effectiveness of the treatment plan.

Why is this important?

The researchers in modern evidence-based medicine found that there are hormone-dependent tumors which have receptors (on their surface) that bind to hormones. They can accelerate the growth of malignant neoplasms. Different methods of hormone therapy based on preventing the possibility of sex hormones stimulate the growth of tumors. Hormone therapy prevents the development of hormones or blocks their action.

Therefore, at present, the planning of adjuvant and neoadjuvant (preoperative/postoperative) chemotherapy treatment is preceded by immunohistochemical studies, namely determining of tumor receptors ER, PR, Her-2new for breast cancer. The predictive value of this marker is that positive Her-2new of the tumor has a more aggressive course than the negative Her-2new. Standard treatment for breast cancer with Her-2new positive status is a prescription of targeted drugs, such as Trastuzumab (Herceptin), lapatinib (Tayverb), Vectibix, Erbitux, Bevacizumab, etc.
