Modern methods of biopsy

A biopsy is a medical research method which involves the removal of tissue from the body for histological examination. Biopsy is required to determine the presence or extent of a disease. When breast cancer is suspected, biopsy must be applied. In Breast Care Centre of INNOVACIA Cancer Center, the biopsy of breast and regional lymph nodes is controlled by means of X-ray and ultrasound.

Stereotactic Trephine Biopsy

In INNOVACIA Cancer Center, Lorad Multicare Platinum unit manufactured by Hologic is used for stereotactic trephine biopsy in diagnostics of breasts contrast masses that cannot be palpated. Breast biopsy is performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia. Biopsy is performed on the special comfortable table with centered aperture allowing a patient to rest in a prone position throughout the procedure. A number of mammography images are taken at different angles to form the three-dimensional image to assure accurate targeting. The accuracy of this biopsy method is achieved by means of computed processing.

Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy under Ultrasound Control

Fine needle aspiration biopsy is performed under ultrasound guidance to drain fluid from breast cyst and lymph nodes that are located near major vessels and/or lymph nodes that are small in size. Test material is placed on special slides and sent for cell biology research.

Trephine Biopsy under Ultrasound Control

In INNOVACIA Cancer Center, trephine biopsy under ultrasound control is carried out in the outpatient setting using local anesthesia. Magnum biopsy unit manufactured in the USA by Bard is used. The advantages of the unit application are the following:

  • Painless;

  • Low invasiveness;

  • No special training required.

Vacuum Aspiration Biopsy

In INNOVACIA Cancer Center, vacuum aspiration biopsy is carried out by means of SenoSonix ultrasound diagnostic system manufactured in the USA. This type of biopsy enables the pathologist to examine the highly informative large in size breast tissue fragments. The surrounding sound breast tissues avoid injury while the biopsy. Benign tumors less than 2 cm in diameter may be removed by vacuum aspiration biopsy method. The biopsy samples are examined in INNOVACIA Cancer Center histopathology laboratory.

Trucut Needle Biopsy

This type of biopsy enables to take a relatively large breast tissue sample by means of trucut needle. The examination of such sample improves the accuracy of the results.

Direct Frontal Biopsy

Direct Frontal Biopsy is a surgical removal of tumor tissue fragment using local anesthesia. It is often performed when the aspiration biopsy results are considered to be not reliable. The results of both aspiration and direct frontal biopsies may give false results, though they are relatively quick.

Open Surgical Biopsy

Open surgical biopsy means that a large mass or the whole tumor is removed during a surgical procedure. This procedure cannot be considered as treatment because the lymph nodes may also need to be removed and more extensive surgical intervention may be required, if cancer cells are detected. If the tumor size is under 2.5 cm in diameter, the entire tumor is excised. If the tumor size is more than 2.5 cm, only part of tumor is removed.
